Marvel Documentaries

Marvel has been creating exciting new content related to the characters in the Marvel universe. So I was very excited to work with Stellar Hawk on two Marvel documentaries, which have aired on ABC and Youtube.

Much of the work I did on these projects consists of strenuous paint work. I filled in the plates which were left empty due to the cut outs of these originally still comic book frames. The end result are these beautiful animations. It is incredible to celebrate and bring life to the work of the talented, original comic book artists.

Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet

Roles: Painter, Animator.
Categories: Animation, Motion Graphics, Visual Effects.

Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet was a mini series that served as a companion piece for Marvel's latest Black Panther comics. I worked on a total of 3 shots for this first two minute episode. All of the comics are made digitally, which meant we had some excellent high res elements to work with. These shots tend to favor a slow motion effect, which creates the illusion that the pieces are rising out the the frame. After painting each plate, I laid out the pieces in 3D space to create parallax. I used After Effect's puppet tool to animate the bodies.

Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp To Pop!

Roles: Painter, Animator.
Categories: Animation, Motion Graphics, Visual Effects.

For Marvel's 75th year, they wanted to create a documentary to celebrate their journey. They provided us with high res scans for animation but, because they were so dated, we had work around the halftone printing pattern, which was used to simulate a continuous tone. Because of this, hand painting each background plate was challenging and time consuming. A five second shot would take on average 4-5 hours to complete. However, the end result is a truly remarkable and stunning animation that brings these classic comics to life. I also created two animations that they wanted to capture the process of sketching out a character. For this, I went over the original and created a few additional versions such as the wire frame and rough shapes.
